The NHS provides sickness certification only after seven continuous days of illness. If you need a sick note to cover this period of sickness you should complete a Self Certification (SC2) form which is available from your employer or on the HMRC website.
Please visit the Direct Gov website for full information about fitness for work following a period of sickness.
After this period a NHS certificate may be issued but you will need to contact the surgery via e-consultation or via e-mail: firstname.lastname@example.org, as it may be necessary to discuss your request with your GP.
Do I need a note saying I’m fit for work?
No. You do not need to see your GP again to be ‘signed back to work’.
Sick Notes / Fit Notes / Med 3 Certificates for employers relating to Coronavirus…
Due to the current pandemic and pressure on General Practice, we are prioritising the urgent medical needs of our patients and will not be providing a medical certificate for Coronavirus related absence.
By law employers may use their discretion around the need for medical evidence if an employee is absent from work for more than seven days due to sickness. We would ask employers to apply this discretion to help support NHS general practice provide care for our population rather than being asked to fulfil unnecessary administrative tasks.
If your employer is still requesting a sick note, please download this form to complete and return to your employer.
